Canon PowerShot A520

Canon PowerShot A510Review of the Canon PowerShot A520

The Canon PowerShot A520 is a highly affordable new camera to the Canon A-range of point and shoot digital cameras. Similar in spec to its forerunner, the Canon PowerShot A510, the A520 offers an increased number of megapixels for greater clarity in your shots. With a 4x optical zoom lens, this camera has a slightly higher zoom capability than other cameras in its class where 3x optical zoom is more common. The LCD screen is respectable at 1.8 inches but is not the largest available nowadays.

The camera has 20 shooting modes including Portrait, Landscape, Night Scene, Fast Shutter, Slow Shutter, Stitch Assist, Movie Special scene mode (Foliage, Snow, Beach, Fireworks, Underwater, Indoor, Kids & Pets, Night Snapshot) and manual options - Program AE, Shutter priority AE, Aperture priority AE, Manual. Photo Effects available are Vivid, Neutral, Low Sharpening, Sepia and Black & White. Continuous Shooting is available at approx. 1.9 frames per second. A 60 second sound memo is available on each image.

An optional waterproof case is available for use in depths up to 40m. Alternatively you can increase the power of your camera with optional lens accessories including a Tele-converter, Wide Converter and Close-up Lens (see spec below for more details.)
A high power flash is also optionally available.

The camera is powered by 2x AA Alkaline or NiMH Batteries (Alkalines supplied).

Overall, this camera offers good features, an attractive, ergonomic design and all at a very affordable price.

As a group of about 20 we each received a camera. The camera takes great pictures. But, about 6-7 cameras developed problems with the lens. We were told that we must have dropped them or bumped them. I know for a fact that I did not and everyone said the same. I was wondering if any other of this model had the same problem. The lens on my camera did not close after it opened. We had to have it fixed.

I really like this camera, The features on it amaze me compared to my current camera (My Dad has the A520 by the way.). If I could have a choice of this or any later versions, I would choose this one. Manual Focus, Manual Settings and everything are great for my needs.
