Canon PowerShot
A85
Review
of the Canon PowerShot A85
The
Canon PowerShot A85 is designed to be easy to use but also offers lots
of creative features. The camera has a 4.0 Megapixel CCD sensor and a
3x optical zoom lens, both of which are more than adequate in a compact
camera. To speed up focusing and optimise exposures, the camera's iSAPs
system analyses the scene and makes setting adjustments before the shutter
release is pressed.
This
camera can be used in fully automatic 'point-and-shoot' mode or completely
manual mode. There are 13 shooting modes to cover a variety of situations.
A special 'Scene Mode' gives you access to 6 additional pre-programmed
modes including 'foliage', 'beach' and 'fireworks'. The 9-point AiAF (Artificial
Intelligence Auto Focus) ensures the camera is focussed - even with off-centre
subjects.
You
can take up to 3-minute movie clips, complete with sound recording, then
playback and edit on the 1.8" LCD monitor. For very high definition playback
on a TV, the camera can also record up to 30 second VGA clips.
The
Print/Share button enables you to print to any PictBridge or Canon Direct
Print compatible printer. When the camera is connected via USB cable to
any PictBridge or Direct Print compatible photo printer, or Windows PC,
a blue light illuminates the Print/Share button to indicate successful
connection. Pushing the button when illuminated instigates a print of
the currently displayed image (based on the connected printer's default
settings) or an automatic transfer of images to the PC. 100 MB free storage
space is available on CANON iMAGE GATEWAY in some regions.
Canon's
ZoomBrowser EX (for Windows) and ImageBrowser (for Macintosh) let you
arrange photo albums, crop photographs and adjust contrast and brightness.
Accessories
for the Canon PowerShot A85 include wide and tele converter lenses, a
rechargeable NiMH Battery and Charger Kit and a waterproof case (down
to a depth of 40m).

We purchased a lemon. This camera started out performing well and after
less than 8 months of use we continually get error message in the memory
card. Our son also purchased the exact camera months earlier and has experienced
lots of dependability problems also. I would not recommend this camera.

I just purchased the Canon A85 and it is awesome. I bought it as a replacement
for the Nikon 900 and the new technology is far superior. I was able to
use it immediately thanks to the supplied AA Alkaline batteries and it
was very easy to use with minimal reference to the manual. I had borrowed
a Canon S 410 which was much more difficult to operate despite manual
reference. The A85 can be used strictly as a point and shoot or can provide
full creative control (unlike the S 400-S410) and can be operated with
full control over both aperature and shutter speed. The prints even at
8 1/2 were magnificent and needed no software correction. I found that
applying the filters, level and curve controls in Adobe Photoshop which
were mandatory with the Nikon 900 actually created inferior images to
the one right out of the camera. Highly recommended the best camera I've
ever owned including SLRs.
