Kodak DX7440
Zoom
Review
of the DX7440 Zoom
Compared
to the DX6440, the DX7440 has a much
larger LCD screen (2.2") which will make menu navigation much easier
than its counterpart. The megapixel count is still 4.0 and the optical
zoom is the same at 4x, but the digital zoom has gone up from 3.8x to
4x. The DX7440 also offers 16 scene modes, 5 colour modes plus movie mode
(all listed below) so this camera offers lots of creative possibilities.
Features
of the Kodak DX7440 Zoom include:
- Professional-quality SCHNEIDER-KREUZNACH VARIOGON 4X Optical Zoom
Lens
- 4.0 MP for sharp, vibrant prints up to 20"x30" (50x76 cm)
- 32 MB internal memory plus SD/MMC expansion slot
- Exclusive KODAK Color Science Image Processing Chip
- Manual and custom controls
- 2.2" high-resolution indoor/outdoor display

- 16 programmed scene modes: Portrait, Night Portrait, Self Portrait,

and white
- Movie mode: Continuous video with audio and on-camera playback

I have owned a Kodak DX7440 for over 12 months now and it is an excellent
featured and good value camera which is totally ruined by a simple design
flaw. The main control is a wheel on the back which is fiddly at best
when the camera is new and which becomes increasingly difficult to turn
as it wears. Mine is now consigned to the back of a cupboard!

- Price/quality - one of the best in it's class!
- 4x optical zoom - really good one - Very good macro mode
- Long night shots exposure (up to 64 seconds) allows great photos in
very low light conditions
- Average dynamic range when shooting scenes with very light and very
dark zones
- A lot of manual controls allowing to take photos in every situation
- Movie quality in 24 fps is like old VHS and still usable on TV
- Movie quality in low-light conditions is not good (too dark even if
the light is enough for less expensive cameras)
- Very slow access to the flash card using USB (maybe driver problem)
- WindowsXP driver problem - cannot upload files to the flash card - needs
installing additional driver from Kodak but I was not able to get it working

Novices will find the DX7440 easy to use - large LCD display, scene modes,
etc. Experienced photographers will appreciate the manual modes and the
very fast 0.2 seconds click-to-capture. Another big plus is the 4x optical
zoom. This camera is fantastic!
