Needed a small compact to takeway for a long weekend in Edinburgh four
weeks ago - eldest child-thing now has my old Nikon 775 and I needed a
replacement quick. The newer P and L series Coolpix with their plastic
bodies didn't appeal to me - but the tough metal exterior and faster (f2.8)
ED element lens of the 4200 did. Found that London Camera Exchange had
Nikon re-conditioned 4200's at under £100 - and I purchased. Optics are
great (Ok it's only a x3 zoom but it does the job - ignore digi-zoom function)
start up time is quick (about 1.5 secs) you've control over white balance,
focus selector, +/- 2 stops of exposure compensation to over-ride the
camera and a host of punter-friendly point and shoot modes. Macro mode
is better than expected and the only downsides I've found so far are the
orange LED beam used for AF in lowlight (puts the subject off) and the
battery usage could be better (have since bought a second EN 5L). At high-res
I've pulled off fine A4 prints that easily match my works kit of its big
DSLR brothers D2Hs/D2X and D1X. It's impressed me - which as a professional
newspaper photographer with close on 20 years experience - takes some
doing.

My Nikon Coolpix 4200 is just a few months old and well taken care of.
When I power it up, it now displays a "LENS ERROR" and the lens will not
open or extend, so the camera is rendered completely useless. In searching
the web, this is apparently a HUGE problem with these cameras, with no
viable resolution. I must say I am very disappointed with my purchase.

3/12/05. Great camera, easy to use, great, crisp photos. It's metal body
gives it a feel of being well built. The battery life is great. I have
only charged it a few times and I bought the camera in December 2004.
There is a warning indicator so you don't get caught without battery power.
The 4200 and 5200 series are better then the 3200 or 4100, "plastic body"
series. The zoom seems much faster. The 4200 just has a much better feel
to it.
