Nikon Coolpix 4600

Nikon Coolpix 4600Review of the Nikon Coolpix 4600

Nikon are promoting the Coolpix 4600 as an ideal camera for beginners. It is very reasonably priced and comes in a compact and lightweight body. Nevertheless it offers a generous 4 Megapixels which is excellent for a compact at any price, particularly one this low. The features, such as "D-Lighting" for repairing underexposed images, the "underwater" scene mode, the 16 pre-programmed scene modes and the automatic "red-eye fix" are the same as those found on the Nikon Coolpix 5600. If you're looking for the same features but are prepared to pay for more megapixels then compare this camera with the Nikon Coolpix 5600. However, for everyday photography purposes 4 megapixels are more than adequate and would be hard to beat at this price.

Features of the Nikon Coolpix 4600 include:

  • 4.0 megapixels
  • 3x optical zoom
  • Compact size and lightweight body
  • Large range of easy-to-use features
  • Ideal for beginners to digital photography
  • "D-Lighting" feature to fix underexposed images
  • In-Camera Red-Eye Fix
  • 16 pre-programmed Scene Modes (4 with Scene Assistance)
  • Underwater Scene Mode
  • Help button
  • Long battery life; Compatible with a wide range of batteries, rechargeables and disposables
  • 5 Color Options including Standard color, Vivid color, Black-and-white, Sepia and Cyanotype
  • Included Accessories: Hand strap, USB cable, Video Cable, 2x AA alkaline batteries, Nikon PictureProject software, Quick Start Guide and Instruction Manual

picked a Nikon Coolpix 4600 for christmas over a sony, kodak, canon and fuji slr, the only thing i regret is the lack of accesseries such as a remote when not using flash it tends to blur but with flash(even if its covered and external light used) it can take pictures in a TINY fraction of a second such as a ball flying 87 mph through the air without blur, actually capturing the threads on the ball sport mode is somewhat lacking as the lcd turns off inbetween shots(a max of 9 captured at full 4 mp res in succession) for people who just want to take good pictures without alot of work this camera is for you, if you tend to like fine adjustments and manual modes, look for a dif model but i highly recomend staying with nikon

Having used one of these cameras at work for clinical photography, its ability to cope with close up work, rendering fine detail and not burning out with the flash in mixed lighting, I am extremely impressed. So much so that I have purchased one for my wife as a present. Have previous experience of the 2200 and found that solid and reliable. All in all a good camera for the novice that can cope with the more demanding user as well.

Found the only way to get a sharp unblurred picture was to hold the camera rock steady, and shoot in sunlight. Any other light setting resulted in blurring. The sport mode "to capture fast action" could not even deal with the subjects hands moving. Believe this could have been a one off? also when shooting indoors every scene setting resulting in image blurring. Thankfully BOOTS gave me my money back after a week and I bought a KODAK easyhare camera.
