I am going on my 5th Digital camera. I recently purchased the Nikon D70
because I needed a quicker more reliable digital camera. I was not dissappointed.
From the moment I turned on the camera it was ready to work. The start
up is instant. The camera's hand control are intuitive enough, so as not
to immediatley refer to the user manual. The feel is heavier than my other
camera's, but again this is a Nikon. (weight is 1.3 lbs). A legend in
the camera business. You do need to use both hands to setup a shot. The
camera needs your eyes and hands to guide through most shots. The attached
lense(18-70) is manually adjusted to focus and zoom on images. The view
finder is a true SLR camera. So pretty much what you see is what you get.
The menu navigation is fairly straight forward. The only thing I did not
like was the hidden options like the countinous shooting mode. The continuous
shooting mode is hidden inside the menu options. But once setup, it never
has to be adjusted again. This is a life saver for me. Having missed many
shots while my camera warmed up or adjusted itself, I feel rewarded now.
Most of the major features of a DiSLR are within reach of this camera.
The bracketing button, playback, ISO, WB, image quality size. The delete
button is very helpful. You hit playback, you view images in three different
thumbnails and decide if you want to delete. You hit the delete button
twice, presto its gone. The Nikon D70 has several preselected scenes to
fit your scenario. There is Auto, Portrait, Landscape, Close up, Sports,
Night landscape, Night portrait. There are four exposure modes. These
preselected scenes are very useful for those amateur types who still need
some guidance. I still use them because I always in a rush. There are
some problems with back type focus, and the shutter has a different click
sound. The back type focus is not a real problem. The shutter click is
the not the traditional Nikon sound. There is a chance that if you don't
steady the camera, that the shutter will bounce or shake your shot. But
again use both hands. Most images are true to color. The portrait types
images are excellent. Most have a sharp resolution and a warm glow. Others
might not like this and complain about "moire" affect. The Nikon D70 comes
in at 6.1 megapixels. That should be enough for most. You can generate
RAW and basic images from the 6 million pixels. You can also reduce the
size of your images for print or web use. Its almost like visiting "Starbucks"
you can order, Tall, Grande, and Venti. Or small, medium, or large images.
Use the menu options on the side of the viewfinder to adjust quality and
size. While this camera won't be my last camera purchase, it certainly
provides enough features to justify the costs. The options are enough
for the professional and more than ample for the amateur consumer. Nikon
scores big, while competing with other lower budget DiSLR. I hope this
will help. Any questions or comments, write to Zag...bigeyedesigns@hotmail.com
