Sony DSC-W50
Cyber-shot
Review
of the Sony DSC-W50 Cyber-shot
The Sony
DSC-W50 Cyber-shot is a slim digital camera (22.9mm in depth) with an
all-metal aluminium body. It has 6 megapixels which is relatively high
and 3x optical zoom which is average for this type of camera. The digital
zoom is 6x which, again, is fairly typical. The optical zoom lens is a
Carl Zeiss Vario-Tessar lens and is operated by a push button mechanism.
The TFT LCD monitor, viewable in sunlight, is 2.5" in size and has 100%
field of view.
The camera
has an optical viewfinder for use in tricky lighting conditions if the
LCD screen is difficult to see. Also, using the optical viewfinder instead
of the LCD screen will reduce the power consumption and help extend the
camera's battery life.
The camera
has "Anti-blur" ISO sensitivity settings up to ISO1000. There is a Hand
Shake Alert feature to help prevent camera shake and an NR Slow Shutter
feature which reduces noise when taking pictures with a very slow shutter
speed, for example 10 seconds or longer. Pre-set scene modes that come
with this camera are Twilight, Twilight Portrait, Soft Snap, Landscape,
Beach, Snow and High Sensitivity. The camera has a histogram indication
feature that helps you set the right exposure by giving accurate information
about the lighting conditions. An exposure warning indicator will let
you know if the exposure level is inadequate.
The camera
comes with 32MB of internal memory. This can be increased by using a Memory
Stick DUO or Memory Stick PRO DUO. The recording formats are JPEG and
MPEG1. Movies are recorded in MPEG VX Fine with audio.
The camera
uses a USB 2.0 high speed transfer connection and is PictBridge compatible
meaning you can print directly to any PictBridge printer without the need
for a PC. The Print Mark function allows you to select images for printing.
The camera
operates in 15 different menu languages - English, French, German, Italian,
Spanish, Portuguese, Dutch, Russian, Swedish, Norwegian, Danish, Finnish,
Polish, Hungarian and Czech. It comes with Cyber-shot Viewer software
and a USB Driver. The other included accessories are a rechargeable battery
(NP-BG1), a battery charger (BC-CSG), power code, multi-cable and a wrist
strap.
This is
a well specified camera at a very reasonable price and is to be recommended.
