Sony
Ericsson K750i
Overview
of the Sony Ericsson K750i
The new Sony Ericsson K750i, launched in the second quarter
of 2005, is the most advanced camera phone released so far, and probably
the most anticipated phone release of 2005, due to advance publicity.
It breaks through the 2 megapixel barrier and, perhaps more significantly
is the first camera phone to feature autofocus (previous camera phones
have all been fixed focus). Clearly Sony Ericsson is levering the digital
camera expertise of Sony to drive forward the multimedia capabilities
of mobile phones.
The camera has a quite respectable 4x digital zoom and
a photo light or flash. A variety of effects and settings are available,
e.g. settings for night, daylight or fluorescent lighting. The maximum
resolution of the camera is 1632 x 1224 pixels. The processor is fast
enough to store a full size picture in 2-3 seconds. A choice of shutter
sounds is available although the shutter sound cannot be switched off.
The autofocus is fast enough for normal use and works
by half-pressing the camera button. Results are fine for most subjects,
with only fast moving objects posing a problem. All things considered,
the camera on the K750i is the best of any current model.
In addition to still pictures the K750i can record video
with sound, although the video resolution is lower (176 x 144 pixels).
Videos are stored in 3GP format, which is the standard for mobile phones.
Although of relatively low resolution, videos are sharp and smooth, not
jerky like many camera phones.
The display used on the K750i is good enough to do justice
to the camera technology - it's a bright active matrix display with 262,000
colours and a high resolution of 176 x 220 pixels. This is the same resolution
as the Samsung D500 for example, but is not as high as the Sony
Ericsson S700i, even though the S700i has a lower resolution camera.
Still, the K750i is aimed squarely at the higher-end of the mass market,
whereas the S700i was more of a niche phone.
As well as its advanced imaging technology, the K750i
has all the features that you'd expect from a top-end phone in 2005 -
MP3 player, FM radio, Bluetooth wireless connectivity (for transferring
data to and from a PC or another Bluetooth phone), Java games and email.
It's a nice-sized phone, similar to the very popular K700i model, and
incorporates many of the design features of the K700i phone. This makes
it easy for existing Sony Ericsson users to pick up and use. In fact,
the user interface has been well designed and should be easy to use even
for those not familiar with Sony Ericsson phones.
The K750i comes with 34 Mbytes of main memory with the
ability to expand this further using memory sticks (Memory
Stick Duo). At present, sticks of up to 2 Gbytes are available.
This is perfect for a device with large video & MP3 storage requirements.
All in all,
it's very hard to fault the K750i and it seems to genuinely live up to
the hype! This is without doubt the best camera phone available in the
first half of 2005.

This little number is great. I purchased it last November on the O2’s
website. I must say I have not really had any problems with it, ok I have
had one from time to time it will freeze but I must point out this only
happens if I am pressing keys to say use a text without waiting for the
phone to catch up. The camera is super, the best and one of the easiest
I have ever had on a mobile. Lets face it… it not going to turn
heads on the bus it's simple looking, no fancy flashing lights to attract
thief’s so I think that’s an advantage! A friend of mine went
and bought a nokia 6280 on O2, within three days he had it back to the
store who replaced it free. My friend's now got it up for sale and he
is back using his k700i and is planning to buy a k750i like mine. Like
many of friends I am technology hungry and must have the most up to date
features but other than video calling id say this phone fits the bill
well. Battery life is awesome; I call a friend with the bat on the red
(15%) for over an hour before it dies. Most handsets on network three
are lucky to get an hour talktime fully charged. As for applications and
games, I have been downloading them free from websites and installing
them on the k750i using Bluetooth, 90% of handset cannot do this without
a data cable, some not at all. It’s got all the other basics like
predictive text, calendar, calculator ECT yeah and it’s got a video
capture mode, but I must say it not brill. The camera has a metal shutter
to protect it. I'd highly recommend this handset for anyone who’s
looking for an outstanding longlasting piece of kit.

My experience with two K750i: It would be an exellent phone, if: * manufacturing
(or parts) quality would be better (my second K750i got the white screen
problem after a few weeks). The first one is still OK * SIM card is difficult
to change. As I travel a lot with 4 different SIM cards for different
countries, this is not the phone I would recommend for frequent travellers
(I bougth it because of the excellent camera.

Got the K750i converting from Motorola, the initial set up wizards appear
helpful, but what it doesn't tell you is that unless you save text msgs
on an existing SIM all msgs will be lost!! seriously annoying!!! It registers
the Sim as a new phone/connection losing all unsaved data. Features appear
pretty standard, but the camera is a major plus, so if you simply want
a good camera phone and not much else this would be a good phone.

Absolutely awe inspiring!! The best phone I have EVER had and EVERYTHING
works smoothly which is more than I can say for other phones I have had.
I don't know how anyone can even compare this masterpiece to a Nokia 6230i.
I really think that Sony Ericsson are the best manufacturer to date. The
phone has a camera that would make your £200 digital Nikon redundant,
full seamless transfer with your PC via bluetooth or the (YES ITS INCLUDED
USB!). Top notch media player and a RADIO WITH RDS!!! YES RADIO DATA SYSTEM
TELLS YOU WHICH RADIO STATION YOU ARE LISTENING TO!!!! I mean the Nokia
can't come close, with it's lame 1.3 MP camera and mediocre 65K screen.
If you were going to buy an MP3 player, DON'T!!!, if you were going to
buy a digital camera DON'T!!!, If you were going to buy a phone DO BUY
THE SONY ERICSSON K750i!!!! I will be sticking to Sony Ericsson for the
rest of my mobiling days!!!! Absolute million out of ten material here.
And for those who complained about the softw are being slow, this happens
on nearly all early releases of all phones and can EASILY BE CORRECTED
VIA A FIRMWARE UPDATE ON THE SONY ERICSSON WEBSITE. THIS IS FREE AND TO
ALL YOU PEOPLE COMPLAINING READ THIS INFO AND STOP SLAGGING OFF A TOP

when i tried to buy this phone in the shops i was immediately advised
to reconsider, because a LOT of the phones coming out of the Sony Ericsson
factories are faulty....so you WILL hear a lot of people with a lot of
different problems...u'll be lucky if everything works ok...most likely
u will have to go back to the shop several times to send it back again
and again until u get a properly working one. my advice to anyone who
is really interested in this phone is DONT LISTEN TO PPL WHO ARE GIVING
BAD REVIEWS AT THE MOMENT - THE PHONE IS QUITE BRILLIANT (or wud be if
it were made properly). wait about a month or two...during which u can
use any old fone...because by that time (hopefully)the phone will be sorted
and ALL its features will be working...don't be fooled, this is THE BEST
CAMERA PHONE AROUND so if ur really into camera fones like i am its well
worth the wait...so wear ur lucky socks when u go to get this fone...if
u dont wanna risk it or dont wanna wait do urself a favour and get the
samsung d500...i am myself choosing between them...this is what it boils
down to. if you want better camera + FM radio go for k750i. if u want
large storage and less risk go for d500. i personally hate the interface
of every single motorola fone ever released, and i think the actual design
of the nokia fones nowadays are getting worse and worse....so be wise,
spend ur hard-earned cash on something worthwhile...if ur like me and
have an mp3 player and not a digital camera go for k750i. if u have a
digital camera but not an mp3 player go for d500 (although memory of 80mb
isn't enuff for any mp3 player i think - and in d500 u cannot use extra
memory sticks but in k750i u can).. thanks very much for reading my review
and i hope it helps you!

Just reading these reviews and i must admit i was a nokia man and have
been for a while but all i can say is i've had more or less every nokia
out there and i've done samsungs etc but this sony is a true contender
it looks good well made and the features are brilliant. Main things for
me is the sound quality compared to any nokia out there is brilliant unlike
the mono sound of a nokia. Camera is best i've seen nothing out there
comes close i'd say at the min i'm really impressed by it. Plus it's very
easy to use on your computer downloading mp3 etc and wallpapers. Only
thing i can say about it is the buttons are a little fiddley but i can
live with that. Due to me having nokias the interface was a little alien
at first but after a while i know my round it fine now. In all it's got
everything you need out of a phone and i highly recommend it.

Got my baby a few weeks ago and still loving it. The camera is brilliant
for something that's sqaushed into a mobile phone - I couldn't believe
the quality of the images it takes, as I was sceptical about its quality
before I got hold of it. The images aren't as good as my girlfriends 2MP
Dimage camera, but they're not too far off. The screen is another major
plus - no more trying to guess whether you're looking at an arse or an
elbow because its totally clear and plenty big too. Added to the fact
it can take up to 2GB sony duo pro cards and contains an mp3 player and
radio too, this phone is pure class. I've not had any problems like those
mentioned in other reviews, and I don't understand why those people didn't
get their handset replaced, because mine works perfectly, not a single
crash. I previously had the SE T630, and that crashed a couple of times,
but SE seem to have ironed it out with this handset, as it's much more
stable. All in all, this is the best handset I have ever had and you would
be hard pushed to find a better one.

I have waited until now before purchasing a mobile phone because frankly,
they didn't interest me all that much. I did want a decent digital camera
and PDA, and so previously I relied on my standalone digital and a small
Palm to do everything. But the advertising for this phone simply drew
me in by its amazing combination of camera, MP3 player, FM radio, phone,
internet browser, simple transfer of files from my computer and large
memory cards being available. I bought it 3 weeks ago and haven't looked
back. I got a 1GB card from Sony, loaded 150 MP3s and still have oer 480MBs
of storage left for digital photos. I quickly learned the HMI features
with the easy-to-use joystick and keys. I now listen to the FM radio at
work with great sound, send and receive SMS/MMS/e-mails, take very good
and focused pics in all types of light conditions, crop them, send to
a printer, and also can finally use the phone anywhere that I go. To vastly
more experienced mobile phone addicts than me, some of this may seem to
be commonplace, but I did a lot of research before I bought and I could
not justify ANY of the competition's phones over the SE K750i. I paid
319 euros and I think it is a deal, and I know I made the right choice!

I have previously had the T630 which was an excellent phone and the reason
I decided to stay with SE. I have had the K750 for about a week now and
am a little disappointed. The call quality is very good and the set up,
while similar to the T630 is a little more complicated. I find the keys
more fiddly when texting, the turn on seems to take forever, and I get
the feeling that you are having to press 5 keys to do something that really
should only take 2. My main complaints about it are: 1. As always they
have to change the size and power comfiguration of the phone so much that
my old SE car holder won't fit it! or charge it! WHY WHY WHY? can't they
just think of the customer for once and make a standard power connection
setup on the base that will just use one charger and fit one holder. My
friend has a K700 and it's almost exactly the same size BUT a COMPLETELY
different configuration underneath and it won't fit her car holder....crazy!
2. The connectivity to the computer is a nightmare! It just will not work!
I have inserted the CD in the system and loaded it as per the instructions,
connected the lead as per the instructions and it just sits there doing
nothing. The manual is utterly useless about this and I cannot load any
MP3's or even download the pics I've taken on the camera. 3. The camera
is superb, better than my digital camera! The panorama mode is truly first
class, giving you a little of the previous image to align the next! But
once you've taken the pics, you can't get them off the bloody thing onto
the computer! All in all a good(ish) phone, the camera feature basically
saves it from being a poor one though. I just really resent having to
change everything in my car to accommodate this phone when it should simply
fit a Sony Ericsson universal holder and charger.

oh well !! I had previously a Nokia 6230, I didn't like it much.., didn't
like the screen and not been able to put the walLpaper I wanted, either
the picture quality. i got this phone now, SE k750i, I liked the design,
the screen quality as well as picture quality (really good) but..., the
downside..., I had to change three times (and I am still thinking if change
it again.., not sure if is again faulty). the first one was switching
off itself, second the speaker phone didn't work and this one, the one
which I could use a bit to write this review give me this impression.
Network signal reception is bad.., even show full reception sometimes
you can not even call and calls drop in same spot where my old phone with
the same SIM has no problems. Radio is really bad, even RDS and whatever
I can not get my favourite radio station while in the same spot I can
with my old mobile. mp3 have good quality but..., the first thing in a
mobile should be to be able to make calls and this phone let me down in
that (not sure if is also a fault in the mobile) and the radio could be
better as well in the reception. Good in picture quality but not as good
as my sony cybershot 2Mpixels. They should try to make a phone which really
is a phone and a real 2mp digital camera. I hope this will help anyone
to make a decision.

After using this phone for 1 week I found that when deleting files it
began to phone my last caller (a define option of the left & right short
cut links would have solved this problem) if you could change it to msg.
another major problem I found was that in the middle of text messaging
or on a call the phone would switch itself off... (the phone was updated
with the latest SEK750i software). When not locking the keypad, pressing
the keypad keys the display failed to show, if you wanted to make a call
you had to press the the back key which fired up the display then you
can make a call or answer a call. When receiving a txt msg the first line
of the txt was readable the following lines were corrupt on the display
I found the only way to correct this was to use the back key go into the
txt msg area and re-read the text msg in the inbox. I took the phone back
to o2 who happily gave me a refund.. fingers crossed hopefully this week
they will be sending me a 6680.

THE BEST OF THE BEST, PERIOD!!! This phone is very small and the beautiful
design is just so sexy. I was like WOW when i received it, the pictures
displayed made it look a lot bigger than it actually is. This K750i has
every feature one could wish for. Call's sound quality is good but not
terribly loud, or maybe it's T-Mobile's fault. The speaker is very loud
though to buffer that. Buy a 1gb memory stick and you got a great portable
mp3 player, the sound of mp3 playback is marvelous. It is very customizable
and very easy to use. The camera and video recording is outstanding and
unsurpassed on the market. Battery life is very good, for everything it
does. The only flaw i have found is that there is no headphone jack and
you have to use sony erricson handsfree to enable the radio playback.
People say the buttons are a bit small, but i have big hands and mostly
no problems with them, plus u wont be using the number keys much anyway.
The price is comparatively cheap too. It is a fabulous gorgeous all- in-one
phone/camera/video recorder/mp3 player. No phone is going to match this
competition any soon. 4.9/5 baby!

Jul 2005
SO FINALLY I HAVE RECEIVED THIS PHONE, and by god is it a corker! This
is a seriously good phone. This is my fourth SE phone and it is the next
logical step forward in the line of phones. Thos of you who are familiar
with the SE interface will be immediately at home with this, those of
you who have had to endure Nokia’s tedious menus will wonder why
all phones are not like this and those of you who bought a newish Nokia
will now know where they got their inspiration from! Unfortunately, those
of you who were daft enough to buy a Samsung, well bad luck, you get what
you deserve!!! SO WHY IS THIS SO GOOD? Where should I start? It’s
ergonomically a great size; not too big and not too small. The screen
is fantastic. The sounds are fantastic. And the camera? Well no other
phone comes close to it. Not only is it 2 megapixles (count ‘em)
but there is so much you can do with them: white balance, macro, effects,
frames, zoom (and you can zoom in after you have taken the pic and save
the zoomed portion) and auto-focus. Yes, auto-focus! This is a seriously
schizophrenic piece of kit. Is it a phone with a camera or a camera with
a phone? It’s also nice to see that SE have improved the quality
of the video capture. These are much clearer than the k700 version. One
thing that is so cute is VideoDJ. You can take a video, edit it, add pictures
to it and then add a different soundtrack to it and create a modern mini-epic.
Top stuff! YEAH, YEAH, YEAH! I know what you’re going to say, I
want a phone not a toy. Well if you just want a simple phone then go and
buy a Sendo or something (not a Motorola, dear god not a Motorola!) The
number of dull, boring, grey afternoons that have been rescued by entertaining
my kids with this phone have been worth the wait alone! SO WHAT’S
IT LIKE AS A PHONE? It does what it supposed to do as well as you would
expect it to. It phones people up and connects to WAP (unlike the Samsung
D500 which connecting to WAP was something of a lottery). I would say
that battery life was pretty good. I tend to charge mime about 2 maybe
3 times a week. Ok I don’t make many phone calls but I do a lot
of texting and I use the other features a lot so I am happy with the battery
life. But hey, I would be happy with charging it every night; it’s
hardly rocket science is it? SO WHAT ARE THE DOWN POINTS? I don’t
know about you but when I read reviews I always read the bad ones first.
I am more interested in what people don’t like about the subject
rather than reading some idiot gushing on about how great his phone is
(……hang on……) Anyway what’s bad about this
phone? Not much really! Ha! Ha! Ha! No there are a couple of minor things
like SE have removed the dedicated WAP button, they have removed the power
socket protector ( I used to like that on the k700) and they have changed
the power socket. Now this is a double edged sword. On the one hand it’s
a pain as none of my old peripherals fit this phone (which is a pain as
I have gone and lost my new hands-free kit) but on the other hand I am
glad because the old plug was a pain. It was so easy to knock the socket
when charging and make it reset and start charging again. Not a big problem
but one time my old k700 started to freeze up as it was constantly disconnecting
and reconnecting. So in some respects I am really glad that they changed
the socket. BUT ONE REALLY STUPID THING I did discover, and please if
I have got this wrong let me know, but you cannot use the charger (be
that home or car charger) and use the hands-free kit at the same time!
What’s that all about? That is a seriously dumb bit of design. Yes
I can use a Bluetooth one but what if the Bluetooth runs out of charge?
What then? SE need to address this as it a bloody pain! TO SUMMARISE.
This is a great phone and you not find one better by any make. If you
can live with the charger/hands-free problem then get this phone, it is
second to none. POSTSCRIPT. If you are a Nokia, Samsung or Motorola fan
and do not agree with these views, tough. Just get used to the fact that
you have bought turkeys! ;-)
